Data.gov is the central repository for lots of data published by U.S. federal agencies. Additional government data can be found through specific agency websites.

Data.gov also maintains a list of other government-run Open Data sites.

The National Center for Education Statistics has data on public and private schools, colleges, and libraries, as well as student achievement and survey data.

The Investigative Reporters and Editors Census project and http://beta.censusreporter.org/ are good places to download and explore U.S. Census data.

The Federal Election Commission’s data catalog publishes regularly-updated data on campaigns, committees, and its regulatory actions. Be careful of duplicate entries.

NYC Open Data is a central resource for data published by New York City agencies.

The Sunlight Foundation’s APIs provide information on Congress (bills, votes, members, etc.), lobbying, and some state-level legislative data.

GovTrack.us provides an API and bulk raw data on U.S. legislators and bills.
